PTA to introduce new network system for cellular operators

ISLAMABAD (December 21 2007): The government will introduce new numbering system for cellular operators by January 2008, enabling them to expand their customer base without going into the trouble of introducing new network access codes, sources told Business Recorder.

Under the new system, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority will replace the existing seven digits with eight and network access code will be reduced from four to three digits. With the implementation of new system, they aid that the cellular operators would be able to accommodate a large number of subscribers at one access code without opting for new one. Presently the mobile operators could have one million subscribers at one network access code and to accommodate more they have to go for new one.

Mobile companies, they said, will start subscribers' awareness campaign from January next year. The new numbering plan for eight digits with three number access code, they said was designed to resolve the problem of frequent allocation of network access code to various mobile operators to meet the needs arising out of phenomenal growth in the cellular mobile sector.

It was also aimed at enhancing numbering plan capacity to create enabling environment for new local loop licensees to share the numbering resource without any constraints, they added.

They said that all the stakeholders, telecom operators, have agreed to the new numbering plan. A consultation, paper, they said was prepared a year ago and all the stakeholders were taken on board about the idea of new numbering plan for the benefit of the telecom sector and above all for cellular operators.

Now, they said all the stakeholders have agreed and cellular companies will run awareness campaign among the subscribers by January next year to switch them over to new system.

Pakistan plans to cover 90 percent of the population by 2015, which would be around 185.6 million, whereas the present tele-density for both the fixed and the mobile lines will also grow. At least one service, landline, WLL or mobile has to be catered fully.

They said that the expected growth in the telecom sector will multiply the need for geographic and non-geographic numbers leaving out the existing numbering plan short of capacity in a couple of years. The numbering plan needs to be revised to accommodate the surge.

The change from seven to eight digits for mobile and fixed line services were necessitated because the telecom sector is undergoing transformation from circuit switching to packet switching. New technologies promise cost-effective roll out solutions leading the way to cheaper solution for the end user, providing an edge to the operators to launch the services with comparatively small Capex and lower operational costs.

Top 9 unique structures soon to be built

obviously, construction technologies are advancing extremely quickly. couple that with multi-billionaires / deep-pocketed companies trying to outdo each other in the quest for the next standout design and you have a near-future filled with mile-high skyscrapers and buildings that no longer look like buildings.

below are 9 strange and unique structures which have either been approved or are in the final stages of approval. some have already been partially constructed.

welcome to the future landscape.

1. aqua, usa (website )

from a distance this skyscraper, to be completed in 2009 in Chicago, will seem quite traditional. it'll only be when you get close and look up that you can appreciate the ripple/jelly effect created by variously sized balconies from top to bottom.

2. chicago spire, usa (website )

the phenomenal Chicago spire, when completed in 2010, will be the world's tallest residential building and the tallest building of any kind in the western world. seemingly modeled on the image of a giant drill poking through the ground, the 609m structure will dominate the Chicago skyline.

3. cctv headquarters, china (website )

at a modest 234m the cctv building isn't going to stand out from a distance. however the design and shape is a crowd stopper to say the least and will be another incredible addition to Beijing's skyline in time for the 2008 Olympics. the shape, described as a 'z criss-cross' results in a very high, seemingly unsupported corner at the front. let's hope there's a glass floor up there.

4. regatta hotel, jakarta (website )

taking on a nautical theme, the developers say the 10 smaller towers represent sailing boats whilst the larger building is 'the lighthouse'. it's the lighthouse that steals the show for me, possibly the most incredible looking structure I've seen for a long time. if it ends up looking anything close to these pictures I'll be impressed.

5. residence antilia, india (architects' website )

construction has begun on residence antilia despite opposition from those who see it as an 'excessive' design in a city where more than 65% of the population live in slums. politics aside and after you recover from the initial shock of seeing a skyscraper that resembles an ikea cd rack, the building actually looks like it may succeed as a stunning, unique, green piece of architecture.

6. russia tower, russia (architects' website )

topped with an observation deck over the city of moscow, russia tower will become the tallest building in europe when completed in 2012 and twice the height of the eiffel tower. construction has already started on this angular beast which was designed by foster & partners, also responsible for the gherkin and spaceport america, currently in development.

7. penang global city centre, malaysia (website )

following months of speculation and sturdy opposition, this humungous project is in the final stages of approval and apparently construction will start very soon. even so, due to the size of the plan it will take at least 15 years to complete. resembling a sci-fi city, the area will be crowned by 2 x 200m towers and completely transform the small island of penang.

8. gazprom headquarters, russia (architects' website )

this gigantic, 300m tall glass flame of a building will house the gazprom headquarters in st. petersburg, dwarfing all structures in its vicinity. it will apparently change colour up to 10 times per day depending on the position of the sun. the building has already been nicknamed 'corn on the cob' by unhappy locals.

9. burj dubai, dubai (website)

this is the big one. when completed next year it will be the tallest man-made structure in the world and the tallest building by a long shot with a predicted height of 818m. note: currently the tallest building on earth, excluding an antenna, is taipei 101 in taiwan which stands at 509m. the photo below is the building's current state: the skyscrapers below the burj dubai used to look tall.

Check out this sleek external 320 GB hard drive!!

If you thought you had a big drive in a small package with Western Digital’s 250GB Passport you can think again. Hopefully you’ve come to expect it these days because soon after you get the biggest and the best something else will come along to out-do it.

WD has announced the launch of the latest in their line of the sleek, portable Passport drives with this one boasting a massive 320GB capacity of storage that is small enough to fit in your shirt pocket. The whole drive and enclosure weigh under a quarter of a pound does not require an external power source. The drive gets its power and transfers data through a single USB 2.0 connection and gives a 480 Mbps transfer speed (which will take you an hour and a half to fill the drive).

The drive also comes with some software from Google to help you quickly search the mass of data and allows some encryption of your files when used with Windows, although it is compatible with both Windows and Mac. Retailing at $229.99 this drive is really not too bad of a deal, and even though I really don’t need a full 320GB of storage for some reason I still want to get one.

Tafiti Search Visualization - Overview

If you head over to Codeplex you will find a number of Contoso Quick Applications posted there. Each one demonstrating various aspects of the Windows Live platform and showing you a "real world" style application that makes use of them, along with the source code so that you can easily apply the various techniques to your own web site.

Today another web application has been released. The focus of this application is Silverlight and Windows Live Search. This short article will give you a quick overview of it's main features without doing a "deep dive" into exactly how it works.

The Context

Most people that I've known can relate to this. You come across a problem and you need to do some online research, say for example, how to integrate Windows Live ID in with your web site. So you hit the Internet and start doing some searches, you find bits of information of one web site, some bits on one blog post, some bits on another. Then you want to find some images for a login and logout button. So you've got all these web sites that you need to remember where the information is and you possibly may also need to share you're research will a fellow worker that's working on the project with you.

Well this is where Tafiti comes in. Tafiti, which means "do research" in Swahili, is an experimental search front-end from Microsoft, designed to help people use the Web for research projects that span multiple search queries and sessions by helping visualize, store, and share research results. Tafiti uses both Microsoft Silverlight and Live Search to explore the intersection of richer experiences on the Web and the increasing specialization of search. Tafiti is also available as a standalone site for those that don't want to dig into the code and just use or sample the application first hand, just head over to Tafiti.com.
